Introduce the architecture and construction industry to youth.
Mission:
Build 4 Youth Outreach Program mission is to introduce both sides of the fields of study in Architecture and Construction as they are different, yet some things are the same. Part of the day would be learning about Architecture and Construction; the other part is doing a hands-on activity to understand the job roles and learn how buildings come together from design to construction stage.
Age Range:
Youth Teams (5th - 8th graders) and High School Teams (9th - 12th graders)
Design Project - Form Schematic Design, Design Development to Construction Documents I will be the client that will provide the vision for the project, timeframe to design and build, and budget.
Design Stage: Each team will develop a sketched design concept on paper that I will then approve in order to move on with design development stage to do floor plan layout. This will be another check to go on to construction document stage. The kids will do a floor plan and elevation at this stage. Once the design is finished and teams receive final approval from the client, it will move to construction stage.
Break - Bid Process or Solicitation of Bids- I will talk to them about the traditional bid process. We will not do this as a part of the project, but I want to explain this step in building construction. For the sake of the project, we will assume they are all the low bid and won the job.
Construction Stage: The teams will get with the General Contractor to build the project. They will have to do an Estimate of materials and supplies used, create a schedule to build project in the field. There will be different assigned roles as follows:
Client - Be You Tiful Girls Director
1. Architect - The architect selected will do the design and they can have one architect intern help assist them with the design.
2. Estimator- The estimator selected will take the design and do an estimate. We will have material priced they can use to do the estimate. A form will be provided as well to do their estimate. There will be instructions to help with estimate.
3. Project manager - The project manager will do the schedule, track work, and change order. (administrative work). There will be one change order for each team to work around. There will be one inspection as well to evaluate the structure. The teams will be stopped at a certain point to see if they can proceed on with building the project.
4. Superintendent- The superintendent will manage the project on the job site.5. Subcontractor - The subcontractor will do the labor to build the structure (but in this situationthe project manager and superintendent will also act as labors at this stage to helpbuild the structure if it is needed).
Evaluation of Project:
We will select the best overall project that I feel have the following components in place with a grading rubric:
1. Great overall design (there will be a base model to follow, but teams can add to the base model to make it their own custom design project)
2. Built a good structure.
3. Communicated well with the team members.
4. Passed the quality control and safety inspection
5. Delivered the project on time.
6. Stayed within budget for the project.
Gift card and trophy will be provided to the winning team members. There can only be up to 6 on the team though. We will provide certificates to all that participate in the workshop though with a participation medal.
